CSE CAN PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT FOR YOU!
|
|
CSE is a contractor of the MoD providing entertainment
to British Forces worldwide in accordance with the Deployment
Welfare Support Policy (DWSP). As the official provider of live
entertainment to the Armed Forces, CSE is dedicated to entertaining
& boosting the morale of HM Armed Forces around the world.
CSE can also provide entertainment for units or locations that
are not eligible to receive shows within the DWSP. If you are
planning a function or event, anything from a family's day to
a mess ball, CSE can offer an entertainment solution to fit your
specific requirements. There are 2 levels of support available
with a cost associated to each:
Fully managed - CSE arranges
all aspects of the entertainment including selecting and booking
artistes & performers, production equipment and crew, transport
and accommodation if required, and a Tour Manager to oversee
everything on the day. Minimum budget for a fully managed event
is circa £7000.
or
Self Managed - CSE sources and
books the entertainment to suit the budget and advises on the
necessary support elements such as production to ensure the
event is successful. The minimum budget is circa £500
plus CSE commission.
The entertainment is selected according to the budget and considerations
such as the size & demographic of the audience, the reason
for the event and the venue whether it's outdoor, Mess, Gymnasium,
Marquee etc also influences the decision.
There are a number of proven formats from:
Stage shows with bands, dancers, comedians and
compere to suit mixed audiences from 100 – 5000
or
Comedy Clubs with 2-5 comedians which work well
with adult audiences no larger than 500
or
Rockeoke gives everyone their 3 mins of fame on stage
with a live band but is not recommended if more than 200 at
the event
or
Celebrity visits/dinner speakers with a Sports
or TV personality or Glamour model. This format requires minimum
production and support which makes it deliverable in most locations
however, it requires plenty of notice to secure a booking and
celebrity fees may exceed available budget
CSE also provide a turn-key solution for any event including
marquees, catering, etc and of course entertainment which can
be anything from magic shows for children, stilt walkers and face
painting to outdoor “Scaletrix” with large remote control cars;
giant table football; giant inflatable sumo suits or bucking broncos
for the grown up children ….…the only limit is your imagination!

Another CSE First - UK Normalisation Gigs
For Troops Returning From Afghanistan
|
|
CSE were delighted to be given the opportunity to entertain a unit
recently returned from a tough tour in Afghanistan.
1 Rifles Regiment, based at Chepstow, had a night to remember
when CSE joined them in their homecoming celebrations. Fresh from
their medals parade the troops and their families came and enjoyed
a night of top class entertainment.
John Ryan opened the show and got the crowd nicely warmed up
ready for the legend that is Paul Zerdin. He had lots of fun and
even got one poor chap up on stage. He didn't look very happy
but was a good sport despite this! The CSE Dancers were also on
hand to provide some glitter and glam. Rock covers band X-Ray
Lima had no trouble at all filling the dance floor and did a cracking
job of encouraging everyone to party and let their hair down!
A special mention must go to the poor chefs who cooked up some
late night burgers for the work's party! We hope you enjoyed the
drinks we left you!
Big thanks to Major Roger, Budgie, Gareth and all the team who
looked after us and made us feel so welcome.

Comedy Moves Forward...
|
|
CSE are always up for a challenge so when MoD asked us to get
a morale boost a bit closer to the action in Afghanistan we knew
where to go. Comedy.
The Forward Operating Bases or FOBs are the places that make
the fairly austere surroundings of Camp Bastion look like the
lap of luxury! They have very little water, sporadic power and
“Terry Taliban” for a next-door neighbour. But this is where the
laughs are needed most and who better to provide them than the
CSE Comedy Club?
So we started planning and realised pretty quickly that you can't
just trot off to the FOBs without a bit of preparation. So on
a crisp spring morning six comedians, two crew and a tour manager
arrived in the Hampshire countryside to take part in Hostile Environment
& First Aid Training that would teach them everything they
needed to know. The exact details of the course we cannot disclose,
because we wouldn't want to spoil the fun for anyone else! Suffice
it is to say that the comedians all emerged from the course prepared
for anything and feeling like Rambo!
The following day Phil Butler and Tom Stade along with our Tour
Manager Ian embarked on their journey to Afghanistan and arrived
in Musa Qala 36 hours later. They found the conditions difficult,
unbearably hot with temperatures reaching 50 degrees, flies everywhere
and dust in places you don't want dust to be. But the shows were
amazing. The audience were delighted that entertainers cared enough
to make the journey and cope with the conditions that they live
in for up to 6 months at a time. They were relieved to have some
new people to talk to but most importantly they were so pleased
to have a reason to laugh for the first time in ages. Phil Butler
said “I absolutely loved it. When you get out there you feel so
relevant and needed.”
After two nights in Musa Qala the boys went back to the relative
luxury of Camp Bastion (where there's a Pizza Hut and flushing
toilets!) They were joined by Barry Castagnola, Ian Stone and
Andy Askins and two more crew members. They went on to perform
a further 7 shows across the country in the main operating bases
including gigs in Lashkar Gah, Kabul and Kandahar.
Comedian Ian Stone remarked “It was amazing, the highlight of
my career, the audiences were fantastic” Whilst Barry Castagnola
felt “They were some of the best shows I've seen, it was great
to be part of it , I'm still buzzing from it”
Andy Askins who's been on several trips to Afghanistan now said
“we're always so well looked after, the shows were fantastic”

Double Whammy
In The Middle East
Both Fujairah and Muscat see some CSE sparkle
|
|
CSE went on another adventure to the Middle East recently. This
time we performed shows for the Navy in Fujairah and Muscat. Two
amazing shows were delivered but the tour proved to be a little
more eventful than usual! The CSE team are always up for a challenge
though!
The group assembled at 5.30am, mostly still half asleep! After
an uneventful flight we collected our bags and went to get our
transport to the hotel. Unfortunately this took another two hours
as our driver “negotiated” with police after crashing into an
airport sign! Finally on the road we thought we were home and
dry until we got stopped by the military police for a check of
our passports! After finally arriving at the hotel some 4 hours
later we were very relieved to eat some late supper and get to
our beds after such a long journey!
We had a lovely meet and greet with crew from the boat the next
day and got on with the set up in the impressive air-conditioned
marquee in the hotel grounds. The show went down a storm - comedians
Rudi Lickwood and Colin Cole, followed by rock band Lucas and
the CSE dancers. The dance floor was full all night long! After
all the hard work we joined the boys from the boat in the hotel
bar and had a few drinks. Some of us wondered if we'd had one
too many when we felt the ground shake violently beneath our feet,
but no this wasn't due to too much shandy, this was an earthquake!
Thankfully nothing too dramatic but we were all wide awake and
ready to leave at 4am (ouch!) for the airport
After negotiating our way through Muscat airport and finally
convincing customs to give us our guitars back we got to our hotel.
A few hours rest and then time to start organising the next gig!
The following day we visited the ship's company of HMS Portland
and enjoyed their hospitality and a tour round the ship. Later
that evening it was our turn to entertain the ship. They enjoyed
a fabulous buffet ranging from curry to a real English roast.
The comedians, band and dancers had a great gig and although the
ship's company were a little shy of the dancefloor at first we
got them on their feet in the end! We were also honoured to entertain
our youngest ever CSE audience member, the CO's six month old
baby daughter – I think she enjoyed it!
We had a great time performing two shows for the Navy in the
Middle East. Thanks to all the people who helped to make it happen!

CSE Go Out With A Bang In Slim Lines
|
|
The last ever CSE show took place in Pristina ahead of the withdrawal
of UK troops from the region.
As numbers were small we decided to put on a mini show in Slim
Jim's Bar – which is like a full show with a band, dancers and
comedians only shrunk down to fit on smaller stage (we don't actually
shrink the people though, there's laws about that sort of thing...)
Despite BA's best efforts to scupper the gig entirely when they
lost a vital piece of band equipment on the flight over we managed
to save the day with sheer determination! Junior Simpson and Craig
Campbell warmed the audience up with some comedy - belly laughs
all round (meanwhile we were at the airport trying to find the
lost luggage, no laughs at all when it turned out BA hadn't sent
it over on the next flight either! Grrrrrrrrr.) The CSE Dancers
shimmied their way through some hot routines and raised temperatures
on an otherwise chilly spring evening.
In the second half X-Ray Lima bravely took to the stage despite
their missing kit and played their hearts out. It didn't take
long before the whole room was jumping and no one noticed that
anything was amiss! At the end of the night I think we broke the
record for “most people ever on a CSE stage”. We wouldn't normally
condone this sort of behaviour but it was a true rock and roll
moment.
The crowd dispersed with smiles on their faces and a few even
managed to bag a CSE t-shirt too. What a night!!

SHOW ME THE FUNNY!
CSE Comedy Club Backs The Big Salute
|
|
CSE joined forces with BFBS Big Salute last month when it held
it's CSE Comedy Club at The Tattershall Castle. Five of CSE favourite
comedy acts - Paul Tonkinson, Junior Simpson, The Raymond and
Mr Timpkin Revue, Ian Stone and Terry Alderton did their bit for
5 deserving forces charities and showed us the funny!
All the acts on the bill gave their services totally free of
charge and the fantastically generous audience gave us a tidy
£1994.69. We laughed so much it hurt, sometimes at the expense
of audience members many of whom had made it across from MOD main
building to take part in the fun!
The night wouldn't have been possible without the kind and patient
help of a few amazing people – Sally Carter and Christian Knowles
at CKP for getting us the venue and helping with the set up! Paul
Timmins and Charles Ellery from Capital Sound and Nick Valdez
and Steve Finch from Siyan Lighting who gave us everything for
free! Sy Travis and Spoons for running sound and lights and the
staff at the Tattershall Castle for keeping the drinks flowing!
We'd also like to thank every audience member who came along
and dug deep, especially in these financially challenging times!

On Your

Racing To Entertain In Bahrain
|
|
In April we found ourselves competing against the Bahrain Grand
Prix as we arrived to entertain the ships company of 4, yes 4,
Royal Navy Minesweepers.
This we knew would be a CSE course record and became a race all
of its own as we squeezed in 4 visits in 2 hours.
The drama intensified when RFA Diligence stayed, took an early
pit stop and was also able to join the show. So the chequered
flag was lifted as 5 ships commenced the evenings event which
took a pace all of its own.
Mark Walker opened the show sharing your snippets and highlights
from time spent together. Then Geoff Boyz took us down memory
lane with stories of the morning after the night before – oh how
true.
Xray Lima ramped up the speed with an amazing selection of your
favourite anthems. All this and the CSE Dancers providing a series
of dazzling circuits on the stage.
Despite the action on the dance floor there were, thankfully,
no crashes and the winners were HMS Pembroke, HMS Grimsby, HMS
Chiddingfold, HMS Atherton & RFA Diligence. . .

History At
Headley!
CSE Bring Bandeoke To Headley Court For
The First Time Ever.
|
|
Arriving at Headley Court I felt somewhat nervous but very excited
to see how the Bandeoke debut would go down.
Traditionally Headley Court had always opted for the CSE Comedy
Club, but POC Louise thought a little bit of karaoke with a live
band would go down a treat…and didn't it just!
Phil Butler and Phil Walker kicked off the show, proved their
worth as funnymen and even took their turn at singing.
During the interval myself and Claire from CSE worked the room
looking for willing volunteers to grab the mic and take to the
stage. At first I thought we would have to use our feminine charm
to persuade people to get up and have a go, but before we knew
it we had a whole list of patients and staff alike who wanted
to strut their stuff – result!
It was a great night and many stars were discovered! It was a
joy to see the guys and gals singing their hearts out alongside
CSE Bandeoke Band, One Night Stand, and the support they got from
fellow audience members was amazing. The room had great energy,
fuelled by fab entertainment and of course rainbow wigs, garlands
and wot-not from the trusty CSE dressing up box!
A young marine called Harry stole the show (and our hearts!)
with his unique rendition of Faith by George Michael which had
everyone cheering and up on their feet. Harry tried to appear
modest after this but he was so brilliant I simply had to make
him agree to do another number…and again he went down a storm!
Thanks to everyone to got up and took part…you were all brilliant!
And from CSE wishing you all a speedy recovery!
Sakina Kajee, Project Coordinator, CSE.

Angie From CSE Shares Her Falkland Adventures
With Us...

|
Sat at Brize Norton, having negotiated the prospect of not being
able to park our cars and realising I'd forgotten the tour float
I knew this was going to be another interesting tour! I was the
only person amongst the 14 of us not to be at all concerned about
the prospect of an 18-hour flight. In fact I was actually looking
forward to no one needing me for 18 hours! The two comedians Paul
Tonkinson and Terry Alderton were already deeply ensconced in
a DVD and looked more like 12 year old boys and less like the
comedy legends they are, the band and dancers were chatting excitedly
about what to expect and the crew were chilling out.
18 hours and several RAF airline meals later (really, how do
they get their paninis so absolutely rock solid?) We landed in
the windy isle and were met by the delightful Flight Lt. Sara
Hopkins and wonderful Staff Sgt. BT. They showed us to our rooms
and we chilled for the evening.
Over the next week we performed four shows at The Gull and Penguin
and what amazing shows they were. This was Big Dog's second tour
for CSE - they were so bouncy and enthusiastic that the audience
couldn't help but be utterly charmed by them. The usual nutty
dancing (which seems to involve a fair bit of barrelling into
each other and beer spilling) ensued with a full dance floor every
night and lots of smily happy faces after the gig. Paul and Terry
got to the funny bones and the dancers made sure that everyone
got a bit hot under the collar with some very raunchy routines!
During the day we were thoroughly entertained with several visits
to various sections including the emergency services, dog section
and even a little trip to the police cells! We also went in search
of some penguins (twice) but they were obviously feeling a bit
shy as we didn't see very many at all! After the shows we were
shown extraordinary hospitality in the Sergeants Mess where the
world was put to rights over the pool table and everyone's glasses
were filled (whether you wanted another one or not!)
The weather was pretty rubbish and I don't think I can ever eat
another sandwich again (thanks Chef!) but a good time was certainly
had by all! To cap it all off we had that delightful 18 hour flight
home (where I was only needed for my extraordinary supply of nutritious
comestibles and very little else!)
We arrived back at Brize, the sun was shining and our cars were
all still where we parked them - phew! Roll on the next one!!

Some one asked do you have to mention the weather in these tour
reports? Well, yes quite honestly, if it's worth talking about.
The month is March, the location is Cyprus, the weather is gorgeous
and CSE have arrived at Ledra and all being kept on a tight leash
ready to rock the Palace to it's foundations were Sean Collins,
the sassy CSE dancers and rock band Big Dog on their first tour
with CSE.
During the day the troops on duty on the Cyprus/Turkish border
made sure we were fed, watered and thoroughly spoiled visiting
places off the beaten track. In return our talent got on stage
and delivered tales, ditties, tunes, moves and Anthems into the
night. By the end there wasn't a dry eye in the house or space
on the dance floor. Thanks everyone for welcoming us and for making
it such a great night...

CSE Dancer Naomi Lynch Tells Us About Her
Recent Tour To Iraq...Read On...
|
|
After a lovely flight to Kuwait we were taken to
Camp Behuring. After less than a few interesting hours of bunk
bed creaking, snoring & general army stomping filled sleep
we were whisked off to the helipad to find...no Helicopter??...Hmmm…it
will be here shortly they say. So we head over to grab some coffee
and after many delays go by it's not looking good for tonight's
show. Eagerly awaiting news, the crew who have still yet to put
the whole set up together on arrival are surprisingly calm (You
gotta love em!). Wahoo, We're on our way. The Merlin swoops down
to pick us up and to make up for it all they let us go ramp riding!
Best seat in the house I say! Nothing like dangling out the back
of one of those babies!!!
In record time the awesome crew, run by Charlie
and with the help of a few Army friends actually pull it off &
the CSE show gets into full swing!!!! With Paul Tonkinson and
Terry Alderton being their usual hilarious selves, X Ray Lima
rocking the place & of course us 3 twirlie girlies in true
CSE fashion being rather raunchy! After a good gig and some grub
we got all tucked up in our sleeping bags had the best sleep!
Over the following week our POC (Mammy of the bunch)
Pat had some treats in store for us. We went to visit the boys
and girls at the Dog Section, BFBS radio, The Warriors: Now those
guys know how to put on a demonstration! They loaded Casey up
with full kit and she had a race with one of the army boys….She
totally kicked his butt!! It had nothing to do with the fact that
me and Rachel were actually hanging on to the back of the poor
fella trying to run! Hee hee .
We had a few pic's hanging off the Big Gun which
we were told is not a tank!! (Although it does look like one).
The lovely tanned guys down at the fire station (one of which
looked like Right Said Fred) took us under their wing and let
us race the fire engines down the runway. Pedal to the metal X
ray Lima's Sen was rather peed off when fellow band mate and non
driver James soared past with Casey flashing in the back seat!
It was time to leave the Cob and head to Baghdad,
we sadly didn't get to say a proper goodbye to Ollie, Martin and
Jamie who had been the best helpers ever!! But we do hope they
enjoyed the Milkshake's, Love cup's and DVD we bought them, Thanks
boys!!!
A bit of a mis-hap with the flights again only this
time they were about 6 hours earlier than expected. We had all
of about 20 minute's to pack up and get to the airport….X ray
Lima's Greg fell out with his sleeping bag which I would have
loved to witness!…bless, he got so frustrated he started punching
it!! Tee hee
Landing in Baghdad we we're shown to our room, the
RQM's room…ooohhhhh…special! After a few hours of not much to
do Casey decided to ask all the boys watching the Premier League
game if they would like to play hide & seek around the base….Hmmm…That
went down like a lead balloon!! So instead, legend Charlie to
the rescue again hooked up a big speaker & cranked up the
tunes!!! We had a lovely evening of chit chat and getting to know
the boys before tomorrow's show.
While in Baghdad we were taken out around the IZ
(International zone). We saw the Cross swords, The tomb of the
unknown solider, Camp Prosperity (trust the American's to turn
a palace into a gym!), The two Saddam Heads waiting to be shipped
to a museum in America, the hotel which the press filmed from
during the war and had lunch at the NEC which is currently the
biggest embassy in the world.
The show was great and to end the evening with nakedness
(no not us girls!!) the guys from camp did a 12 man naked pyramid
on stage for all to see and take pictures of!!! (thanks boys)
It was time to go but not before waving off the
general & leaving the QM ‘H' a little birthday treat….Thanks
to H & gang, Paddy & his team, Elmo, Dodge & Hottie
with the headband for being great hosts and showing us a fab time
in Baghdad!
Ah…back to Luxury of 5 star…Hey where is my sleeping
bag and body armour!!...I feel naked!!
Our day off played host to the most contradicting
events of the previous week, a trip to the spa, complete with
massage pool, sauna & steam room, an amazing dinner at the
Crown Plaza's Tepenyaki restaurant and a bed complete with duvet
& pillows!
Arriving at Camp Behuring POC Gemma took us to see
the mechanics & engineers where we were once again let loose
with some Army property. A giant 8 wheel drive transport vehicle
was the target this time and Casey, I must add was a fantastic
driver. The poor fella who owned it almost had a heart attack
but as always the girls were loving the thrill of danger!!!
With the stage set to Rock & Roll and a crowd
mixed with British & American troops the show was unforgettable!
I especially take my hat off to Terry Alderton for having the
nuts to completely take the mick out of the Americans even though
the crowd consisted of about 600 of them all still armed with
rifles!!!!!...You are a true fellow nutcase!
The crowd was wild with excitement and going crazy,
so seizing the opportunity of a lifetime I finished the night
off by launching my self into the crowd and surfing the tidal
wave of army hands….. Unforgettable!
All in all it was an amazing tour. The guys &
girls we met were all so fantastic & it truly is one of life's
greatest achievements to help boost morale & be part of CSE
history.

SURFING IN THE
DESERT?
Afghanistan Feb 09
|
|
CSE returned to Afghanistan recently with an "exceptional”
live show! John “for the girls” Fothergill and Terry Alderton provided
the laughs and had the crowd in stitches from the off.
We've been to Afghanistan a few times and we've seen audiences
let their hair down but never before have we seen crowd surfing
on this scale. Particular highlights include an upside down Centaur
– a half man, half horse creature who was first on the dance floor
with his happy feet/hooves (don't ask!). We also had our first
streaker of the year (there's always one!) Congratulations to
him for managing to get his trousers over the lighting truss (where
they almost caught fire but that's another story!) Our 3 dancing
girls Alicia, Claudia and Leanne had aching faces after posing
for thousands of photos with the boys and girls! The reception
we got was extraordinary and reinforced what we always knew –
that if Carlsberg made audiences – the British military would
be it! And all this was after consuming nothing stronger than
coffee.
The comments on our Facebook group speak for themselves; people
have already put up clips. (I do hope you got the day glo paint
out of your uniforms!) You can check out the clips by joining
our Facebook group – just search for CSE Forces Entertainment.
We had an amazing, exhausting, dusty, sweaty, life changing time
and we thank all the team who looked after us. From the movers
to the drivers to the pilots, the chefs and everyone in-between
you were all amazing and played an integral part to the success
of the tour! Most of all though we thank the audience for being
the best in the world - you're all legends and we salute you!
Until we meet again - be careful out there!
Here are some of your comments – thanks for the feedback and
please keep it coming!

“Just seen the show at Bastion….Well impressed. The band

Belly Laughs, Beautiful
Ladies & Banging Tunes in Bahrain
|
|
We thought the Ships Company of HMS LANCASTER deserved a little
treat having been stuck onboard over Christmas so we nipped over
to meet them in Bahrain and give them a belated chrimbo pressie
all wrapped up in CSE ribbons and bows. When HMS RAMSEY asked
to join in the party we were happy to extend the love.
There was a sharp intake of breath when customs confiscated the
band's guitars at the airport but with a little help from the
DA's office we got our booty back and it was all systems go.
The ships company enjoyed a hot buffet before Phil Butler and
Sean Collins took to the stage with their comic wit ensuring lots
of laughs all round.
The CSE dancers thrilled and charmed with some hot dance routines
and big, big smiles.
Then it was time to get some action on the dance-floor and Lucas,
guitars in hand, did a great job of getting everybody up for a
boogie. True to form, they rocked the crowd, coming back to perform
not one, but two encores!

CSE Comedy Club Makes A Welcome Return
|
|
CSE can brave it in all weathers, so while some of the team have
been escaping the office for sunnier climes, others of us have had
to dig out the thermals for a visit to Pristina.
It's been a while since we took a comedy club to Slim Lines,
but we put together an all-star line up who were ready to fire
off the jokes all guns blazing.
It certainly was cold but we soon warmed the crowd up and whipped
them into a frenzy of comic proportions!
The lovely Gemma gave as good as she got, coming under heavy
attack from funny men Terry Alderton, Simon Bligh, Sean Collins
and Ian Moore.
Comedian John Ryan had his fun too. He piped up with a little ditty
on all things Kosovan while getting our Military Escorts Shaun and
Ian onstage to sing and sway along with him, and didn't they do
it well!!! |

Its A Comedy
Palace
CSE Comedy Club - Ledra Palace Cyprus
|
|
CSE decided that enough was enough and what better way to cope
with the January snow then to take a little trip to sunny Cyprus
with a couple of comedians in tow.
Yianni Agisilaou, John Archer, Phil Butler, John Fothergill and
Ian Stone were the men to bring the laughter to Ledra Palace,
and they went down an absolute storm!
We didnt even have to do a 5 minute call as the audience were
all sat patiently awaiting the CSE comedy gold.
It was a super gig, with plenty of chuckles and out right belly
laughs. Thanks to Iain for being such a good sport and getting
up on stage at the mercy of not one but two comedians determined
to empty his wallet! Thanks also to the Colonel for sitting at
the front, where he was fair game for a ribbing!

CSE served up another slice of comedy pie in Afghanistan this
month.
Fresh from playing some of the UK’s finest venues Andy
Askins, Phil Butler, Sean Collins, Addy Van Der Borgh and Phil
Walker dished out the gags and got lashings of laughter in return!
The boys visited Kandahar, Bastion and Kabul and despite a few
members of the tour party being struck down with a very bad case
of the “man flu” the show still went on!
The boys also got the chance to visit lots of units during the
day and find out about some the fascinating work done in the region.
This was Sean Collin’s 3rd visit to Afghanistan, “I
love these tours, the audiences are great and we’re always
so well looked after…I hope to come back again soon”
Thanks to all the team who looked after us so well on our tour!

Gary Linekar Visits
Selly Oak Hospital!
|
|
Staff and patients in the military wing of Selly Oak hospital
got a surprise this week when football legend Gary Lineker popped
in to say hello.
Gary visited all the patients on the military wards signing autographs
and posing for photos. There was much banter and one lad, although
feeling quite groggy after coming round from an operation still
had enough strength to lob a packet of crisps! There were many
jokes about crisps as well as lots of chat about football!
Gary signed hundreds of autographs and posed for loads of photos
and left the patients and staff with big smiles on their faces!
We wish all the patients a swift recovery from and thank the staff
for looking after us so well. .

Its Mayhem
in the Atlantic
|
|
Back in the frozen south CSE pitched up for another round of
shows for the ships company's of HMS Iron Duke and RFA Black Rover
plus the boys and girls stationed at MPC.
Top circuit comics Barry Castagnola and Phil Walker kept the
laughs coming hard and fast.
The CSE dancers raised temperatures with some impressive moves
and even more impressive costumes!
Electric Mayhem played out of their socks every night - they
came, they saw, they crowd surfed! Leaving audiences baying for
more at every show the atmosphere was incredible.
We cant wait to do it all over again!

HERE COME THE GIRLS!!
(And the boys...)
|
|
This month saw the triumphant return of CSE to The COB in Basrah,
Iraq. CSE unveiled a brand new format especially for Op Telic.
The CSE Comedy & Dance show featured 3 glamorous dancing
girls Julie Chitty, Alicia Rose and Claudia Evans - the first
dance troupe into Iraq since 2004. The girls performed 4 provocative
routines to roars and cheers of approval.
Top circuit comedians Mark Walker, Junior Simpson and Tom Stade
joined them and provided laughs aplenty! Each one of them had
the audience hanging on their every word and audience members
were seen literally crying with laughter. Tom Stade's "film
star" good looks ensured that the ladies in the audience
didn't feel too left out - not only a phenomenal comedian but
also very easy on the eye!
The cast performed 2 shows a night in The COB and raised the
roof at every one of them. Off stage the cast took conditions
in their stride enjoying the security and "cosiness"
of the "Baghdad Beds" and carrying their body armour
wherever they went - even to the loo!
They took part in several visits to various units around the
camp including the Dog Section, G Battery and The Med Centre.
The girls posed for hundreds of photos and chatted to lots of
the boys about their work.
On the way home the cast made a stop at Camp Beurhing in Kuwait
and performed a show for British troops based there. It was another
CSE barnstormer and a great end to a fantastic tour.

CSE almost stripped
bare in Kosovo
|
|
CSE rolled off a plane into Pristina airport, went to collect
the baggage...and waited...and waited...and waited!
Along with our bags, the instruments and costumes were temporarily
detained in Budapest, but we kept the smiles on our faces and
hoped and prayed everything would turn up before the show.
The cast and crew were very patient and many thanks to our hosts
in Kosovo for being very helpful in obtaining some little 'essentials'
and taking us to Japanese Karaoke for some lost-luggage bonding.
The gods were looking down on us and during sound checks, Tour
Manager Angie returned back from the airport triumphant with a
minibus full of stuff.
Once the Gym was full, Lucas, now having done their virgin CSE
tour, wowed the crowd at Slim Lines, with hardly time to breath
between songs.
Comedians John Fothergill and Ian Stone were both brilliant and
got lots of laughs, and of course the CSE dancers came out giving
it the glamour and the moves.
Once the show was over they were swamped for photos with the
guys which Lianne, Rachel and Davina were only too happy to pose
for.
Post-show drinks with everyone in the mess were enjoyed by all
and then it was time for bed - it really is a rock'n'roll life
at CSE!!!

Its been a summer

goings on:

Sing-a-long-a-Ledra
Following the success of Bandeoke in Kosovo, we decided that
sunny Cyprus should join in the fun, and they didn't disappoint.
True to form everyone dressed up for the show and special recognition
goes to Captain America and Banana Man for making a superb effort.
Addy Van Der Borgh and Phil Butler provided some excellent comedy
before One Night Stand took to the stage and got Ledra Palace
rocking with some very willing volunteers from the audience.
Laugh Attack in Iraq!
4 funnymen by the names of Andy Askins, Colin Cole, Paul Tonkinson
and Sean Collins returned to the Middle East bringing much laughter
to both Camp Buerhing and the COB. The tour was a success and
even a take cover drill couldn't dampen spirits, as they say ‘the
show must go on' and for CSE it certainly did.
Turning up the Temperature in Afghanistan
We returned to Afghanistan this summer with a cracking full show.
Mark Walker and Gordon Southern true to form got the audiences
going with their comic wit and Electric Mayhem and the CSE dancers
whipped them into further frenzies with their raunchy moves and
a whole lotta rock!
Fun in the Falklands
It was HMS Liverpool's turn for a little CSE treatment at MPC.
Alongside for the treat were HMS Clyde.
The boys and girls aboard enjoyed an opportunity to meet the
dancers, comedians Silky and Phil Butler and a band new to CSE,
3 lovely lads called Lucas, before they are strutted their stuff
onstage.
It was a great gig, as usual the comedy was top class, the dancers
were top class and by the performances Lucas gave on this tour,
they can certainly come again!
Dubai
The ships company of HMS Montrose had ‘a right good knees
up' when CSE put on a show for them in Dubai. Comedians
Wayne Deakin and Ricky Grover got to their funny bones while
fantastic rock covers outfit X-Ray Lima ensured that the dance
floor was full all night long and the CSE dancers were on hand
to add glitter and a bit of cheeky sparkle to the proceedings!
It was a night out they'll be talking about for a long time to
come!

HMS Somerset shows
Taranto how to Party!
|
|
The ships company of HMS Somerset had a whale of time at the
recent CSE show in Taranto, Italy. Whilst it could be argued that
Taranto is a slightly less salubrious part of Italy where mod
cons like efficient air conditioning have yet to fully take on
this did nothing to dampen the spirits of the ship's company. The
girls and boys had gone to great efforts and all arrived looking
fabulous - considering how many of you had to share bathrooms
that really was no mean feat!
The show kicked off with comedy from Phil Butler and Andy Askins
who had everyone doubled up with laughter. The CSE Dancers shook
their thang and the boys all did the “I'm not staring at her bottom”
face that we've come to know and love over the years. Those crazy
boys from The Zoo kicked off the 2nd half in fine style and ensured
that no one left the dance floor until they said so!
It wasn't the easiest tour we've ever done, it wasn't the nicest
place we've ever visited but it was certainly a lot of fun and
a night out the boys and girls will be talking about for a long
time to come.
Here are a couple of quotes from the ship:
“I had a fantastic time, and honestly can't think of anything
negative to say about the evening!! “
“As with the last CSE show I will treasure the memories for
the rest of my navy career!”
"I though it was excellent. The performers interacted
perfectly with the ship's company and you could tell from the
reaction they got that the troops enjoyed the show.”

Bandeoke Back By Popular Demand In Kosovo
|
|
We had laughs aplenty, a family re-union and some great performances
from the guys and gals of NSE when the powers that be requested
CSE bring back Bandeoke to Slim Lines for not one but two nights.
Comedians Barry Castagnola and Silky opened proceedings and we
almost had tears when after a glimmer of recognition, Silky found
his cousin in the audience…having not seen him for many years!
Armed with the trusty dressing up box and even more tunes on
the song-list it was soon over to the audience who needed little
persuasion to don their costumes, pick up their inflatable guitars
and get groovy with the mic.
It soon became clear that there were several emerging stars in
our midst, including Rat Boy, who really got the audience going
and was chanted back onstage for an encore! He was so popular
we invited him back to kick off the next night, where an initially
shy Charlie soon found his voice and even did a Summer Nights
duet with our very own Sakina.
The British Ambassador and his daughter came along to the second
show (no ferrero rocher jokes please) and he delighted all by
taking his turn with One Night Stand and singing a little ditty.
Thanks to those brave souls who got up and gave it their all!
Big thanks also to the team who looked after us so well and made
us feel so welcome on camp.

BRITISH FOOTBALL
HERO MEETS SOME SPECIAL HEROES
Alan Hansen tackles Selly Oak Hospital
|
|
Liverpool legend and BBC's Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen
offered a much deserved morale boost to staff, patients and families
at Selly Oak Hospital on a recent CSE visit. Joined by his wife
Janet, Alan brought smiles to the faces of the injured service
personnel from locations including Iraq and Afghanistan.
Eager to pick the brain of one of the nation's leading authorities
on football, patients happily chatted with Alan about their favourite
teams and more importantly, Euro2008! Complementing staff on their
excellent work, Alan posed for pictures, signed autographs and
some sweet treats were provided by CSE.
Deeply touched by his experience, Alan stated, “These lads and
their families have been through a really tough time, it was a
pleasure to come and meet them”.
There was a great buzz throughout the building as people recognised
the famous visitor walking through the halls of Selly Oak, lighting
up everyone's faces.
Thanks to Alan for donating his time as his visit did wonders
to lift the spirits of patients and staff!

CSE and Underwraps hold open audition to
find new CSE dancing blood
|
|
On Wednesday, 18 th June, CSE (Combined Services Entertainment)
in association with dance agency Underwraps will be holding auditions
at Husky Studios in Elephant and Castle to find new recruits to
the CSE Dancers Troupe.
There are around 20 girls who regularly work for CSE and they
are all hugely enthusiastic and proud of what they do. They work
hard during the shows performing several high energy commercial
dance routines on their own and with the bands. In addition to
this their work continues off stage posing for photos and chatting
with troops keen to meet these talented and glamorous girls. Living
conditions can vary wildly from 5 star hotels in Dubai to shared
tents in Afghanistan. One thing is certain, the perfect CSE Dancer
needs to have a sparkling personality, proven ability, a great
image and a keen sense of adventure!
CSE will audition dancers on Wednesday, 18th June at
2PM at Husky Studios 29A Amelia Street, Elephant and Castle SE17

ANOTHER GOLD FOR DU'AINE
LADEJO
CSE sends this Predator of Gladiator proportions
to Germany
|
|
He is already a superstar on the athletics field and now he has
won first place in the hearts of the families of 4 th Mechanized
Brigade whose loved ones are deployed on operations in Iraq.
Du'aine Ladejo, a two-time Olympic medallist and star of 'Gladiators',
took time out of a busy schedule to visit the wives and children
of forces families based in Osnabrück Germany. His morale
boosting visit organised by CSE came at an important time for
the families as they prepare to welcome home their loved ones
after 6 months in Iraq.
Whilst the media focus on the soldiers and the role they undertake
on operations Du'aine was taken aback by the way that the families
cope with the separation and the stresses that they endure during
a deployment.
As a keen promoter of sports in schools Du'aine was honoured
to present the winning trophies to the teams who had taken part
in a football tournament. It was clear that the children were
in awe of this athlete and all that he has achieved.
This is my first CSE Tour and I have really enjoyed it”, explained
Du'aine, “I have been going to schools for 14 years but I have
not had any contact with the Army and after today I am really
looking forward to working with CSE again!"
The excitement over the visit was fuelled by his recent appearance
on the new hit TV series ‘Gladiators'. As ‘Predator' Du'aine Ladejo
insists he is ‘one of the good ones' and whilst the younger children
were in awe, one teenager threw down the gauntlet whilst a young
toddler decided to try and stare him out.

Big Salute Comedy Night in London
Waves of CSE Laughter Hit The Thames!
|
|
April saw the first ever CSE Comedy Club gig in London at the
Tattershall Castle on the banks of the River Thames. CSE, usually
more at home in the hangers and mess halls of Afghanistan and
Iraq, brought comedy home to a very appreciative crowd all in
aid of the BFBS Big Salute.
We rounded up a bevy of the best in UK comedy talent to perform
for the audience of over 150 paying guests. Andy Askins, Phil
Butler, Ricky Grover, Mark Walker and Paul Zerdin left everyone
helpless with laughter - not a bad way to spend a very wet Monday
night.
The audience was made up of MOD staff, serving and ex military
personnel, members of the public, representatives from the 5 charities
being supported by the Big Salute and many CSE performers who
came down to show their support.
In total the night raised a whopping £1,990 through the
sale of tickets, wristbands and t-shirts.
The Big Salute is a new annual Forces Fundraiser which will raise
money for 5 forces charities - BLESMA (for limbless ex servicemen),
Combat Stress (for sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress), St Dunstans
(for visually impaired ex servicemen), Veterans Aid (for homeless
ex servicemen) and Headley Court (the Military rehabilitation
centre in Surrey).
CSE was very happy to be a part of the Big Salute and thanks
to everyone to helped make this evening a great success.

LOADED LINDSEY STRUTT'S
HER STUFF IN GERMANY
|
|
This was possibly the best day to have been part of the Rear
Party stationed in Osnabrük and Münster. British soldiers
clamoured to meet Loaded magazine's latest glamour
model Lindsey Strutt on her whistle stop tour of their bases.
Lindsey provided the boys in the Rear Party, who are guarding
units in Germany while waiting to be deployed, a much deserved
bit of fun away from home. Dressed as a sniper in a ghillie suit,
Lindsey felt the weight of several weapons, got to grips with
a warrior and was even up close and personal in a Challenger Tank!
Lindsey posed with soldiers she had previously met in Iraq, and
others who had only days before returned from Afghanistan. One
soldier even delayed going home so that he could meet her! After
spending an afternoon on their best behaviour and not wanting
to let Lindsey go, soldiers from 21 Royal Engineer Regiment seized
the opportunity and locked her up in a cell in the guardroom!
The glamorous Doncaster native commented on how much she enjoyed
the trip by saying, “I loved meeting and talking to the soldiers.
I enjoy trying out the opportunities that I wouldn't get if I
were not in this job. I get asked to do all sorts of things and
I am ready to give anything a go; although it was a bit scary
on the horse!”

| HMS
ENDURANCE - Arrived, enjoyed and re-deployed |
|
When HMS ENDURANCE stopped off at MPC, CSE was there to give
them some well-earned escapism. We had a fabulous Ship's visit
and could not believe the amazing views from the wardroom aboard
this icebreaker.
Yianni Agisilaou , Phil Walker, Electric Mayhem & the CSE
Dancers had the chance to chat to most of the ship's company who
happily shared the odd tale or too!
Later that evening 180 sailors were treated to an intimate yet
interactive gig and despite the size of the venue the audience
filled the space with enough noise and presence to start an avalanche.

Did any body

What glorious weather met us when we (finally) arrived in the
Falklands. Not a cloud in the blue sky and a panic to dig out
the high factor sun creams before the ‘burn' set it.
The Electric Mayhem, Yianni Agisilaou , Phil Walker and the CSE
dancers performed 3 outstanding shows to a packed audience at
the Gull and Penguin. Personnel based at MPA and the ship's company
from HMS CLYDE rocked the joint – truly awesome!
We were also treated to some amazing section visits and had the
chance to meet some of you going about your day jobs. And you
can't do a visit to the Falklands without coming back with hundreds
of pictures of penguins! So a big thank you for making us feel
so welcome and we can't wait to come back do it again.

Lucie Wows & James
Rocks Out in Afghanistan
|
|
Troops in Afghanistan were treated to an entertainment extravaganza
when CSE rolled into town last week. Platinum selling solo
artist Lucie Silvas was joined by CSE stalwart James Fox for 6
spectacular shows in Camp Bastion, Kabul and Kandahar. Of
course no CSE tour would be complete without a bevy of CSE Dancers. Jane
Victory, Julie Chitty, Liane Everitt and Claudia Evans opened
the show to roars and wolf whistles of approval from the crowd.
Two of the UK's comedy circuit's finest talents Mark Walker
and Sean Collins providing laughs in between some very high energy
dance routines.
The tour was an endurance test with several flights across country
via Hercules aircraft, some very early mornings and some pretty
late nights too! The cast were treated to every extreme
including a sandstorm, ice and searing heat! Well over 4000
troops managed to see a show - the biggest CSE shows for 5 years.
Lucie said "It's such a pleasure to come here and play for
these guys, everyone has been so lovely and the response has been
amazing!" Lucie really wowed the audiences with her
incredible voice and had some fantastic banter with them, they were
eating out of her hand by the end of the night and roaring for
more! James Fox also rocked out and got everyone singing
along.
This was not a gig for the faint hearted and although nervous
everyone took things in their stride and coped well with the basic
conditions. James said "We're only here for a few days,
these guys do this for 6 months in all weathers, you can only
respect and admire that"

An OZZY Suprise for
Selly Oak.
|
|
There were more than a few double takes when CSE made a suprise
visit to the RCDM at Selly Oak recently to try and spread a little
cheer on the ward.
And who better than a member of the first family of celebrity
royalty, fresh from the Brits two days before.
Ozzy Osbourne has been looking forward to showing his support
for the troops for a number of years and this was an ideal opportunity
for him to meet patients, families and staff face to face, while
he was in the UK.
He spent more than two hours chatting, having his photo taken
and giving out gifts to each of the forces patients and their
visitors.
Here's hoping CSE will get to work more with Ozzy in the future,
he was a real gent, completely down to earth and genuine in his
support for what's happening in the forces world.
After the visit he headed straight back to LA to prepare for
the next leg of his live world tour, in Australia and New Zealand.
Ozzy Osbourne...we salute you!

When RFA ARGUS came alongside in Salalah, much to the surprise
of the ships company, CSE pitched up as well!
The cast were treated to a ships visit making a great opportunity
for our Comedians, Rudi and Colin, to get to know the key characters
and create a personal touch to the evening's entertainment! X-Ray
Lima's lead guitarist, Sen, was even given a master class by a
budding new band member! We think it made all the difference!!
The production crew toiled all day at the venue and gave us the
setting for a night to remember. With the buffet out of the way
the show got underway. Colin Cole opened the evening, and woe
betide any brave person venturing to the bar during his act!!
The CSE Dancers high kicked, gyrated and threw off their (faux)
furs – all in the best possible taste. Rudi Lickwood had us in
stitches ‘init' and the night just got better with X-Ray Lima
giving their all. Now we know not everyone likes to dance but
RFA ARGUS you certainly made the band earn their keep; so they
were mega-chuffed when at last you succumbed and boogied along
at the end of the night.
We had a blast and hope you did too – after all CSE is your party.
We'd just like to send our love and best wishes to everyone on
HMS ARGYLL – maybe our paths will cross before the end of the
year.

WHERE HAVE WE BEEN??
|
|
Don't you just hate looking at websites that are out of date
and are quite obviously not being taken seriously? Well, CSE must
confess to being guilty and we hold our hands up – but rest assured
we're back and it won't happen again.
Our reasons for this ‘lapse' are entirely genuine! Firstly, Angie
decided to have a baby. We now welcome Angie back to work and
say hi to baby Joe, - he's already getting used to his mum being
on tour. Then we said goodbye to Georgina who, after 4 very happy
years, was offered a big gig which she'd have been daft to turn
down. (Those of you have met George know she is many things -
daft is not one of them). We miss her but we've moved on and we're
delighted that Claire joined the team. Claire had previously worked
in BFBS Radio during University terms; that was until we pinched
her and introduced her to CSE.
The final and most valid reason was the sheer volume of CSE work.
Please excuse the boasting but we're quite proud of our achievements.
In the last 12 months CSE has doubled the number of shows it delivered
and is set to double that again for 2008. That's quite impressive
for a bunch of girls (even if we can multi-task).
On a serious note, we would just like to say a big thank you
to everyone who comes the shows, to all those who get involved
on and off the stage and behind the scenes. Without your participation
CSE wouldn't be the success it is.
We are looking forward to meeting you when we're next in your
location. If you haven't had the CSE experience check out some
of the tour reports below and you'll get a feel for what's in
store. If you're coming back from Iraq or Afghanistan we'll definately
see you on your way home.
Promise this page will be different if you log on again in March.

| LAUGHING
ALL THE WAY TO THE COB & KUWAIT |
|
The CSE Comedy Club was back in Iraq in January.
Comedians Colin Cole, Rudi Lickwood, Tom Stade and Paul Tonkinson
performed 7 shows in The COB and one show at Camp Beuhring in
Kuwait.
The four funnymen endured daily “take cover” drills – this involves
hearing a siren and hurling yourself under cover whilst donning
a flak jacket and helmet. Colin Cole – who stands at an impressive
6ft 7” - proved that big fellas can jump (very quickly) when he
dived over a wall in record time! Meanwhile Paul Tonkinson discovered
that keeping your keys in the front pocket of your jeans was a
serious error when a hard landing took him by surprise and nearly
ended his hopes of having more children. There was even a drill
2 minutes before the start of a show. As they say in show business
“the show must go on” and it only ended up starting ten minutes
late. For troops in Basrah daily take cover drills are an unpleasant
but regular fact of life. For the four comedians it was a chance
to experience the harsh realities their audience face daily and
still find some humour in it.
As if spending time face down in the dirt wasn't bad enough there
was also a complete loss of running water for 24 hours which meant
no showers and no flushing loos! It's amazing what can be achieved
with a baby wipe and some Lynx although everyone was relieved
to get a wash when it came back on!
Rudi Lickwood sumed it up for everyone:“It was full on but the
shows were great and the audiences were brilliant. I really enjoyed
it but was pleased to get home. I've total respect for the guys
who spend 6 months doing that every day!” .

BANDEOKE - KOSOVO
GETS IT FIRST.
What? Me sing? On stage? With my very own
band?
|
|
Yep that's the brand new Bandeoke format that takes karaoke one-step
further.
So CSE pitched up in Kosovo with a band, a dressing up box, over
250 songs with words then stood back and let the audience set
the scene for an evening's fun.
OK people were a little bit shy to start off with but once the
warm up acts Phil Butler and Phil Walker showed 'em how it's done
the evening soon got underway. You don't even have to be able
to sing as Angie and Claire were happy to prove.
So when Bandeoke comes to your location dig out your Elvis or
ABBA costumes and mosh along to your fave raves!

EAST
MEETS WEST
Bollywood comes to Cyprus
|
|
Sofia Hayat
is billed as Britain's leading Asian actress and it looks like
she can add ‘Gurkha Sweetheart' to her list of credits following
her visit to 10 Transport Regiment and Queens Own Gurkha Logistic
Regiment at Ledra Palace in Cyprus.
With Sofia suited and booted in her loaned desert combat, the
UN soldiers treated her to a display of their specialist skills
and capabilities during the day. That evening Sofia reciprocated
with a display of her own talents.
Out of the uniform and into a specially designed 'opaque' (that
means tastefully see through) dress the evenings entertainment
commenced with Sofia being piped in by the Regiment bagpiper and
then treated to the famous Kukri dance. Sofia took the stage singing
a couple of Asian numbers and a classic Christmas carol.
This was followed by a costume change and an impromptu Bollywood
Dancing master class which the regiment threw themselves into
enthusiastically.
Sofia had a fab time meeting everyone and said "I am genuinely
delighted to have met the regiment and feel truly humbled by how
hard they work and what dangerous and challenging jobs they do.
I hope I can do more for them in the future".
We know we have a number of Ghurkha fans in the CSE audience
and it's been great to identify an artiste, a talented one at
that, who can cross the cultures bringing Hindi speaking, Bollywood
dancing, FHM cover girl, actress and singer all in one very atrractive
package.

LEE'S BACKYARD IN BASRAH
|
|
Lee Hurst understands how difficult life can be for the British
Forces serving in Iraq, especially during the build up to Christmas.
So Angie wasn't surprised when he was on the phone in November
asking her to ‘make it happen'. Lee loves these gigs and freely
gave his time to bring a smile and morale boost to the service
personnel in Basra.
So - 1 man, no props, pots of energy and loadsa laughter was
delivered twice nightly while the boys and girls had some well
earned down time.
It's not easy in Iraq; there is some serious work going on but
Lee was made to feel very welcome and during the day he was treated
to a number of equipment demonstrations. He even got to practice
a few operational drills and although this really brings home
the reality of being deployed to Iraq, Lee brought much hilarity
to routines.
Huge thanks to Lee and to everyone in Basra who made his visit
all the more enjoyable. We know gigging in Iraq isn't everyone's
cup of tea and it does take a special kind of person do this.
Lee you are special! .
